Services
Nutrition care is provided to patients assessed to be at nutrition risk. Seven therapeutic dietitians are assigned to the various Medical Center units. Each dietitian has developed their own specialty in nutrition support, surgery, renal, pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, transplantation and maternity medicine. In addition, outpatient dietetic service is provided to patients who are referred by medical staff. Outpatients are counseled in a designated clinic within the Dietary Department, as well as in the Outpatient Department (OPD) clinics.

The Dietary Department serves about 1000 meals per day to patients and staff through a central cook-serve food production system. Patient meal service is being developed to offer a selective menu. In the meantime, patients who have difficulties with their food selection are seen by dietary staff to assist them in obtaining their food preferences.

The Medical Center cafeteria welcomes staff and visitors seven days a week during the opening hours listed further below. Staff can view cafeteria menu and check their meal charges at the following link: http://hospital.aub.edu.lb/cafet/

Educational Programs
The Dietary Department is committed to teaching and runs a Dietetic Internship Program, where eight graduates in nutrition and dietetics are trained over a period of eleven months to become professional dietitians.

In addition, the Dietary Department provides nutrition education to Med IV students during their family medicine rotation. Students learn about nutrition assessment and about hospital diets.

Besides these two formal programs, therapeutic dietitians educate the Medical Center staff on nutrition related subjects as requested or as needed.

Patient Education
Patient education is integral to patient care. Therapeutic dietitians provide patients and when appropriate, family with nutrition education during hospitalization. Learning needs and abilities are assessed, and the educational process is multidisciplinary. Patients will come to understand the rationale of the Medical Center diet and will be educated on the diet to be followed post discharge. Patients will also be advised of the follow-up care which can be obtained at the dietitian outpatient clinic.

Various educational settings and resources are available to ensure that education is as effective as possible. Patient education can be one-on-one or in a group session. In all cases, patients would receive tailored, printed information for their reference.

Besides inpatient education, nutrition counseling is provided to outpatients who are referred by medical staff. Outpatients are assessed and educated in the dietitian’s outpatient clinic within the department, as well as in the following Outpatient (OPD) clinics: diabetic, developmental, adolescent and in St Jude Children's Cancer Center.
