For the fifth consecutive year, the Salim El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Program (SHBPP) at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine (AUB FM) and Medical Center (AUBMC) presented a physician and a resident with the SHBPP/AUB FM Humanism and Professionalism Award at the resident’s graduation ceremony, which was held on June 1, 2016 at the Assembly Hall. The noted recipients of this year’s award were Dr. Mona Osman El Hage, Instructor of Clinical Family Medicine at AUBMC, and Dr. Hassan Doumiati, third year resident in the Department of Neurology.

In response to this announcement, Dr. El Hage commented, “I am honored and humbled to receive this award that symbolizes integral values in medicine namely looking at the “humane” nature of each person and dealing with him/her in a professional way. Gestures coming from the heart, full of compassion, respect and kindness can make all the difference when dealing with our colleagues, students, patients and others. I am proud to have been a student, a graduate and now a faculty member of a great institution that embraces the values of humanism and professionalism in addition to being a leader in education, science, and research.” She added, “ I would like to remember here two dear persons to my heart: my late father and my late son Hicham, who both taught me the real meaning of life and the privilege that each one of us has in making the lives of others better by just simple behaviors such as caring, being empathetic, considerate and ethical. This award is dedicated to their memory.”

As for Dr. Hassan Doumiati, he affirmed, “I have always believed in the importance of the humane and professional aspect of medicine, and being personally recognized by this prestigious award is a deeply humbling and honorable experience to which I am sincerely grateful. I dedicate this SHBPP-AUB FM Humanism and Professionalism award to every patient whom I was honored to help and relieve his suffering. This award provides me with encouragement and a feeling of responsibility to continuously challenge myself for further success in my profession as a healer.”

The SHBPP/AUB FM Humanism and Professionalism Award, the first of its kind in the Arab world, honors qualities of compassionate care and selfless dedication to excellence. The recipient of the award is also a remarkable role model, self-reflective about his/her own continuing development. It is granted to the physician and resident who exemplifies the humane and professional aspects of medicine and who is exceptionally proficient, compassionate, kind, responsible and concerned about the welfare of patients, colleagues, staff and students.
