Vice
President of Medical Affairs and Raja N. Khuri Dean of the Faculty of Medicine,
Dr. Mohamed H. Sayegh, was awarded the prestigious National Cedar Medal, rank
of Officer for his tremendous contributions to the field of medicine and
distinguished scientific research by former President of the Republic of
Lebanon, His Excellency General Michel Sleiman.
Former
President Sleiman presented Sayegh with the award in a private ceremony held at
the Presidential Palace held on May 24, 2014. When presenting Dr. Sayegh with
the medal, Sleiman cited Sayegh’s many achievements as well as his instrumental
role in providing essential medical services to the larger community of
Lebanon. He referenced Sayegh’s impact on improving the health of the people of
Lebanon and the region and reducing the burden of pain through numerous
outreach initiatives across the Middle East.
Dr.
Sayegh is a world leader in organ transplantation and transplantation
immunobiology research. In his field, he has made substantial and landmark
contributions. He has published over 250 original articles in addition to a
large number of reviews, editorials and book chapters. He has also edited
several books in kidney diseases and transplantation. He has been the recipient
of many prestigious international awards and has served on numerous
international committees. He served as president of the American Society of
Transplantation in 2001.
Upon
returning to AUB and Lebanon in July of 2009, after spending 22 years at
Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Sayegh envisioned and developed the AUBMC
2020 Vision, adopted by the Board of Trustees in June 2010, which is propelling
patient care, medical education and research to new levels of excellence unseen
before in the Middle East region. This
strategic vision, with clear goals and implementation steps has generated a
significant amount of local, regional and global support.
